State of the Sector

Idaho's nonprofit sector plays a vital role in communities across the state; from meeting basic needs to strengthening civic life. Since 2005 we have been monitoring what's working, what's changing, and what support is needed most in Idaho.

The State of the Sector report is our biennial, data‑driven look at the nonprofit landscape, examining economic contributions, organizational health and capacity, charitable giving, and a timely issue shaping the sector today.

Idaho Runs on Nonprofits

From crisis response to community-building, Idaho nonprofits show up where the need is and stay long after the headlines fade. They strengthen the economy, support families, and create the conditions for people to thrive. Idaho Runs on Nonprofits, which is why tracking the sector's capacity, challenges, and impact isn't just informative, it's essential.

The Philanthropic Gap

Nonprofit funding is often discussed as a matter of generosity. In practice, it is a system, one built on multiple sources that together make the work possible. As that system shifts, so does what is asked of it.

Government grants have become less consistent, and with that change comes a growing expectation that philanthropy fill the gap left by the loss of government support.

It is not just budgets that are affected, but the programs and the people behind them.
